History of The Classic

The Baldwin Richardson Foods Frederick Douglass HBCU Football Classic is more than just a football game—it’s a celebration of tradition, excellence, and school pride. Rooted in the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), this annual Classic unites players, fans, alumni, and communities for a spirited matchup during the regular season.
HBCU Football Classics are known for their electric atmosphere, deep-rooted rivalries, and cultural significance. Game day is an experience like no other—from the high-energy crowd and vibrant tailgating scenes to the unforgettable halftime battle of the bands.
Named in honor of Frederick Douglass—a national icon and proud Rochester resident who championed education, equity, and integrity—the Classic reflects his enduring impact. As Mayor Malik Evans shared, “Frederick Douglass is integral to the fabric of Rochester.”
The inaugural Classic in 2024 featured Central State University and Albany State University, setting the tone for a powerful tradition. This year, the 2nd Annual Baldwin Richardson Foods Frederick Douglass HBCU Football Classic returns on Saturday, September 27, 2025, with Central State University taking on Lane College. Join us in celebrating HBCU excellence, heritage, and unity.
